CHAPTER 9

Mo had been surprised, as she’d entered the conference room a few minutes before Technical Team, to see a sheet of paper in front of each chair around the table. There was still no one in the room, so Gerhard must have come in and placed the agendas there some time before.

The leads and managers started filtering in. Gerhard was first, greeting her with an expressionless nod of the head. Kartik and Tanner looked at her with surprise, and Lear was effusive as he entered with Chuck and Suresh. “Hey Mo,” he said. “Sitting in for Brendon?”

“Yup.”

“Nice. Well, this is where the magic happens.”

“This is where the madness happens,” Suresh said to muted laughter.

Nicky came in last, her eyes connecting immediately with Mo’s, two women in the room now instead of one.

“All right, getting right into the agenda,” Gerhard said, “I want to thank you all for your flexibility, since the meeting had to be moved. Also, everyone has noticed Maureen, who is sitting in for Brendon, who has taken ill.”

“Someone said he passed out at the all-hands yesterday?” Nicky said to Mo.

“He did,” Mo said. “He’s in bad shape.”

“Yes, we are all pushing ourselves very hard at the moment,” Gerhard said, intending to move things along.

“This is a wake-up call, guys,” Chuck said, looking in turn at Lear, Suresh, and Gerhard. “First of all, we don’t know if Brendon was contagious or how long he was in the building that way, and second, this is where people start running themselves down. We need to keep an eye on people.”

“Yes, we are doing that,” Suresh said.

“Good point,” Lear said.

“Very good point, Chuck,” Gerhard said. “Thank you for that. Now, first item, as always, is integrations.”

Corey reported that the integrations were going well, but still had a status of yellow. “Good progress, though” he said. “We should be caught up by the end of the month.” This surprised Mo. She’d been curious about the online help Brendon had been working on—which, of course, would need to be integrated into the system like everything else—so she’d done some poking around and learned that the online help technology was homegrown. An engineer would need to be assigned to help Brendon format and integrate the files, and Brendon hadn’t mentioned any of this to her. “Chuck and Nicky will have to remap the QA schedule so we can start incrementally,” Corey said. “Not ideal, but that should get us back on track.” Mo resisted the urge to interject, seeing that the help builds would be covered later in the agenda.

“That sounds very promising,” Gerhard said. “Is there anything we need to raise with Charlie at this point?”

“I talked to Charlie,” Chuck said. “He’s not happy, but it’s the same shit we always do, so he’s okay with where we’re at.”

“Son of a bitch!” Tanner said, and everyone laughed.

Next, Nicky gave her report on the test automation. “We’re green for now,” she said. “Feeling pretty good that things won’t blow up in our faces once we start the real deal.
